Browardist’s Code of Ethics

Our mission is to serve Broward County through accurate, independent and accessible local journalism. Every editorial decision is guided by the public interest and our commitment to earning and maintaining readers' trust.

Accuracy

We strive to report accurately, fairly and in context. Information is verified through reliable sources whenever possible, and we distinguish clearly between verified facts, analysis and opinion. If information cannot be independently confirmed, we will disclose that limitation.

Corrections

When we make mistakes, we correct them promptly and transparently. Significant factual errors will be updated as quickly as possible.

Independence

Editorial decisions are made independently of advertisers, sponsors and commercial partners. Advertising, sponsored content and contributed content are clearly identified. Financial relationships never determine news coverage or editorial conclusions.

Fairness

We seek relevant perspectives from those affected by our reporting, particularly when coverage may be critical or controversial. We strive to provide individuals and organizations with a reasonable opportunity to respond before publication whenever practical.

Transparency

Whenever possible, we identify our sources and explain how information was obtained. Anonymous sources are not used. We are transparent about conflicts of interest and avoid situations that could compromise, or appear to compromise, our editorial independence.

Community-Centered Journalism

Browardist exists to serve Broward County. Our journalism aims to help residents better understand their community, discover local opportunities and participate more fully in civic life. We believe local journalism should inform, hold institutions accountable, celebrate community achievements and provide useful information that improves everyday life.

Respect

We treat sources, readers and one another with professionalism and respect. We seek to minimize unnecessary harm while recognizing that truthful reporting may involve uncomfortable or difficult subjects. Decisions regarding privacy and identification are made by weighing the public interest against potential harm.

Diversity of Voices

Broward County is one of the nation's most diverse communities. We are committed to reflecting that diversity by seeking a broad range of perspectives, experiences and expertise in our reporting and future contributor network.

Artificial Intelligence

Browardist values journalism created through original reporting, firsthand interviews and human editorial judgment. Artificial intelligence may be used to support administrative or production tasks. AI is never used to replace original reporting, fabricate quotes, create fictional sources or publish news without meaningful human reporting, editing and fact-checking at the core of each endeavor.

Accountability

Trust is earned through consistency. We welcome reader feedback, encourage corrections and continually evaluate our journalism to better serve Broward County and beyond.

This Code of Ethics serves as a living and breathing document and may be updated as Browardist grows while remaining grounded in the principles of accuracy, independence, transparency and public service.
