On Monday, September 28, Browardist will join more than 1,000 newsrooms and news organizations across over 100 countries for World News Day. The message is straightforward: Know the facts. Understand what matters. Choose trusted journalism.
This year’s campaign runs September today through October 1, with Monday as its focal day. It coincides with the United Nations’ International Day for Universal Access to Information. What began with 17 participating organizations in 2018 has grown into a worldwide call to examine where our news comes from and how it gets reported.
Browardist is proud to be a global partner in that effort. On Monday at 4:30 p.m. sharp, we’ll host a special World News Day presentation via Zoom, open to the first 1,000 virtual guests. The presentation link will be shared in THE WEEKLY 954 newsletter, which lands Monday at 9:54 a.m., and on editor Jesse Scott’s Instagram story, @jesserobertscott.
Why gather around journalism? Newsroom closures and shrinking budgets have made original reporting harder to sustain. Meanwhile, AI-generated and unchecked content and disinformation can reach readers before a reporter has made a single call. World News Day asks participating newsrooms to show the work behind their stories, giving audiences a clearer way to judge what deserves their trust.
That work matters here, too. A local story starts with someone asking a question, checking a claim, calling another source and getting the details right before hitting publish. We hope you’ll join us Monday to talk about why that process matters and what it means for this beautiful, sunny place we call home.
