Welp, that cookie crumbled fast.
Chip City Cookies has shuttered its Fort Lauderdale shop at 921 SE 17th Street, which opened in 2025. Its Aventura and Miami shops are gone, too. The oversized-cookie chain has closed every location nationwide. So, a local dessert disappearance really is a national business implosion here.
For anyone accustomed to swinging by the 17th Street shop for a sugar fix, that’s an awfully abrupt goodbye. And the public details behind this cookie collapse are decidedly bitter.
According to PEOPLE, Chip City announced the shutdown October 2, one day after promoting its new Crisp Apple Fritter Cookie. Talk about promotional whiplash. Its president told employees October 1 that the remaining stores would close that day. The company cited economic pressures, declining sales and changing consumer preferences.
Then there’s the lawsuit. According to PEOPLE, co-founder and former CEO Peter Phillips sued Chip City, investor Enlightened Hospitality Investments and president Nicholas Baizan September 28, alleging breach of contract, wage theft and retaliation.
Phillips alleges his pay was cut off following pressure to transfer personal web domains and sign loan documents. He also alleges termination and moves to revoke his family’s health insurance after demanding unpaid wages. These are allegations, not court findings. PEOPLE reported that Chip City and its investor did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
For Broward cookie hunters, the immediate takeaway is simple. That 17th Street cookie run is over.
