South Florida is absolutely hot AF right now, and Sweet Aloha Ice Cream has a deliciously dramatic idea for cooling off. How about ya inhale a mountain of shaved ice faster than everyone around you?
The Davie dessert shop will celebrate its fifth anniversary on Saturday, August 15, with its third annual Shaved Ice Eating Contest, live island entertainment and a freshly updated tropical setting. The festivities unfold at 8600 West State Road 84, Suite A.
The frozen showdown begins at 1 p.m. and is free to enter. Contestants must register online by noon on Friday, August 14. If competitive eating is your hidden talent, your summer moment has arrived.
Once the brain freezes subside, Sweet Aloha will keep the celebration rolling. PolyProud Productions and Braddah Derek Suzuki will bring live island music and performances to the shop from 6 to 9 p.m.
Guests can also check out the shop’s recent improvements, including new window seating, tabletops and countertops. Sweet Aloha opened five years ago as a self-described hole-in-the-wall and has gradually grown into a colorful neighborhood destination for Hawaiian-inspired ice cream and authentic shaved ice.
“Our customers have truly made this possible,” owner Jimmy Anderson tells Browardist. “Showing us their aloha by sharing our shop with their friends and family and simply being a joy to serve over the years.”
Anderson said the long-range dream includes opening additional Sweet Aloha locations. For now, the Davie flagship is marking the milestone with frozen treats, friendly competition and an evening dose of island culture.
