In a move that could quietly change - and in some cases save - lives across Broward County, MDVIP is partnering with two of its Fort Lauderdale physicians to help eliminate one of healthcare’s most stubborn barriers: access to diagnostic testing.
Running through April 2026, Dr. Kira Fenton and Dr. Cristina Savu are teaming up with Light of the World Clinic to cover all laboratory testing fees for uninsured patients. The initiative also establishes an Emergency Diagnostic Fund designed to help cover the cost of more advanced procedures, including CT scans and colonoscopies, services that are often financially out of reach for those without insurance.
Light of the World Clinic has long served as a safety net for children, adults and seniors living below the poverty line. While the clinic provides free medical care, lab testing has historically remained a gap. one that can delay diagnoses and treatment.
“Light of the World provides a wide range of critical diagnostics that are crucial to preventive medicine, things like comprehensive metabolic screenings, lipid panel for cholesterol, TSH (thyroid) testing, glucose and A1C monitoring, and more,” Sandra Lozana Barry, President/CEO of Light of the World Clinic, tells Browardist. “It’s through our wonderful partnerships with specialists, donors, volunteers, and partners like MDVIP that we continue to fulfill our mission of providing access to healthcare for all. As our founder, Dr. Erwin Vasquez, always said, healthier people lead to a healthier community.”
For both physicians, the initiative underscores the importance of catching issues early rather than reacting too late.
“Preventive care is the difference between understanding your health and managing your symptoms, or letting issues persist and, in the most dire cases, overwhelm your quality of life,” says Dr. Cristina Savu. “We focus on preventive care rather than reactive care to better support our patients’ long-term health. With this level of foresight and providing continuity of care, it’s a better blueprint for longevity and overall wellness.”
Dr. Fenton sees the effort as deeply personal.“
As a native of Broward County, it is so rewarding to be able to give back to the community that I’m in,” she says. “My practice, my patients, and my family are all here, so I’ve come to understand the community's concerns and goals. It’s natural for a doctor to want to take care of people, and partnering with Light of the World helps our care go a little farther. The more care we can provide patients, the healthier their lives will be, and that is something we all strive for.”
