Brunch just got a unique boozy twist in the form of a frozen orb.
Meet the Mossa Ball, the playful, prosecco-fueled invention from Chile Limón Fusión, the Hollywood culinary mashup of Peruvian and Mexican street food flavors with the right amount of attitude and a whole lot of heart.
Back to that Mossa Ball: what looks like a citrusy snow globe is actually a nine-ounce mimosa-style drink with a frozen core made of natural juice - think orange, strawberry, mango, passion fruit, guava, even coconut - and a dose of bubbly prosecco inside. You pour more prosecco over the orb, sip as it slowly melts, and score discounted refills until the ball disappears. It's part cocktail, part science experiment, and, overall, a new way to brunch around these parts.
“The idea came from my wife,” Chile Limón Fusión co-owner and Mossa Ball creator Raúl Chávez tells Browardist. “We go to the beach a lot and she loves mimosas, but they always get warm. So, I started thinking... how can I keep it cold and still make it fun?”
The result is a brunch drink that’s both delicious and interactive. Launched just a few weeks ago, the Mossa Ball already has a cult following, with 160-plus slung in a single weekend at the Yellow Green Farmers Market location alone. Your first pour of a nine-ounce drink runs $6 at its YGFM location and $12 at its restaurant in Downtown Hollywood. Refills – until the orb melts - run $4 at its market outpost and $8 at its restaurant. Chávez says most guests easily squeeze five pours out of a single ball before it’s history.
Of course, this buzzy drink isn’t the only thing that makes Chile Limón Fusión pop. Ceviche is the top seller here, a classic Peruvian recipe served over crispy Mexican tostadas, and the tortillas for the tacos are pressed fresh to order. The quesabirria gets a Peruvian remix, and don’t sleep on the morisqueta, a layered rice-and-bean dish with Mexican cream, queso cotija, green salsa, and Chávez’s family recipe for carne. “It’s my mom’s recipe from Guerrero,” he says. “We make it just how my grandma used to.”
In other words, you can totally come for the frozen mimosa ball and stay for a feast. Just be warned, once that orb melts, you’ll be hooked... and maybe want to order another one.
Chile Limón Fusión is located in Yellow Green Farmers Market at 3080 Sheridan Street #647-646 in Hollywood; and in Downtown Hollywood at 1924 Tyler Street.
