Big tiki news, people. Fort Lauderdale’s iconic Mai-Kai is officially entering its rum era with the debut of its signature Old Style Special Rum Number 1, a collectible-worthy bottle that channels nearly seven decades of Polynesian palace history into one high-octane sip.
“Mai-Kai Rum No. 1 is the first rum crafted specifically to honor our 68-year legacy built from a proprietary blend inspired by the original Mariano Licudine flavor profiles that powered our classic cocktails,” Cory Starr, general manager and beverage director at Mai-Kai, tells Browardist. “While created with cocktails in mind, it’s also suited for high-octane sipping and delivers a depth that enhances any tropical cocktail it touches. Its beautiful presentation, custom bottle, labeling and vibrant tropical packaging makes it a standout Black Friday release and a true collectible for our Mai-Kai Ohana.”
Available beginning Friday November 28, the rum will be sold exclusively at the Mai-Kai gift shop for $75 per one liter bottle or $400 for a case of six. Created by Master Blender Don Benn in collaboration with Alexandre Gabriel and the Long Pond Distillery team, the blend is crafted from refurbished copper stills to revive historic Caribbean rum styles.
Expect bold aromas of banana, black treacle and juicy fruit over toasted oak before a palate of funky fruit, dark cane syrup, baking spice and vanilla custard. At 50% ABV, it offers a muscular but smooth finish built for both classic cocktails and confident sipping.
To toast the release, Mai-Kai will host a free launch event on Friday, November 28 at 5 p.m. at its Bora Bora and Molokai bars. Guests can expect rum flights, special merch and live jams from Makani Ryel along with Smirks & The Night Mares. No reservations required.
