South Florida’s signature LGBTQ+ cinematic event is back with its most expansive spring edition yet. The 28th annual OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival runs Thursday, April 23 through Sunday, May 3, spanning Miami-Dade and Broward counties with more than 20 international, North American and East Coast premieres representing 20 countries. This year brings an even broader footprint in Fort Lauderdale alongside its Miami roots, plus a lineup that leans into global storytelling and independent voices.
Opening night sets the tone with a new “Under the Stars” experience at the Miami Beach Botanical Gardens, featuring The Dinner (La Cena), a Spanish film blending tension, history and humor. The previously announced centerpiece, Maspalomas, explores aging and identity through the lens of a 76-year-old man confronting long-held fears. Closing night shifts to Savor Cinema with the international premiere of We’ll Find Happiness, followed by a community block party packed with food vendors, filmmakers and live performances.
A standout moment lands April 27 at Paradigm Cinemas: Gateway Fort Lauderdale, where Academy Award-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black will be honored alongside a screening of his latest project Rock Out, a deep dive into the queer roots of rock and punk culture.
The slate itself spans continents and genres. Highlights include the North American premiere of Armani And The Birth of Italian Fashion, the star-driven Lone Star Bull, and the bold, aristocratic tale Madfabulous. Additional buzz surrounds Blue Boy Trial, a trans-centered historical drama, and Uncle Roy, a documentary spotlighting a trailblazing figure in queer visual culture.
Beyond screenings, expect filmmaker panels, afterparties and select at-home viewing options from May 4–10. Individual tickets start at $17, with subscription packages and priority access available for members.
