Shane Strum is dropping the “interim” from his Memorial Healthcare System title.
The South Broward Hospital District Board of Commissioners has named Strum president and CEO of the Hollywood-based health system, making permanent an interim position he has held since September 2024. The Broward County native will oversee an organization comprising six hospitals, including Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, and upward of 17,000 physicians and employees.
Strum’s two-year interim tenure included the opening of freestanding emergency rooms in Miramar and Pembroke Pines, plans for another in Hollywood and the start of construction on a $670 million bed tower at Memorial Regional Hospital. The system also invested in robotic surgery, cardiovascular care and imaging technology while recording the strongest financial performance in its 73-year history.
“Shane has delivered results our community can see and feel: new emergency rooms, a state-of-the-art bed tower now under construction, and the strongest financial performance in Memorial's history,” Board Chair Elizabeth Justen said in a statement provided to Browardist. “He's proven he has both the vision and the discipline to lead this system, and today's vote reflects the board's full confidence in him.”
Strum will remain president and CEO of Broward Health while leading Memorial. The two public health systems retain independent boards, budgets and operations.
Their Better Together collaboration has already expanded access to primary and maternal care, with work now extending into oncology, neurosciences and graduate medical education. In an August contributed piece for Browardist, North Broward Hospital District Commissioner Ray Berry outlined the vision, describing cooperation between two independent systems focused on better access, stronger coordination and improved outcomes.
“I'm grateful for the trust this board and this community have placed in me,” Strum said. “Memorial is stronger today than it's ever been, and I'm excited to keep building on that momentum, expanding access to care, growing our clinical capabilities, and taking the Better Together collaboration with Broward Health to the next level. This is just the beginning of what we can accomplish together for Broward County.”
