South Florida’s regional rail system just hit a major milestone. Tri-Rail surpassed 4.5 million passenger rides in calendar year 2025, marking the highest ridership total in the system’s history and officially exceeding pre-pandemic levels.
The announcement from the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority underscores sustained momentum for the commuter rail line, which also exceeded 4.5 million rides during its most recent fiscal year. The new figure eclipses Tri-Rail’s previous peak in 2019, when the system recorded more than 4.4 million rides in both fiscal and calendar years.
“We were not kidding when we said last year that we planned to keep breaking our own records,” said Palm Beach County Vice Mayor Marci Woodward, Chair of the SFRTA Governing Board. “The value of this system speaks for itself, and it shows that more than ever we must continue to protect this essential service, which serves as a critical asset for the region.”
The record-breaking year follows a strong 2024, which ended as the system’s second-highest ridership year. Officials point to a broad mix of daily commuters, seasonal riders and leisure travelers driving the growth. Special service offerings, including post-midnight trains on New Year’s Eve, have also played a role in expanding usage.
Often described as the equivalent of adding another lane to I-95, Tri-Rail continues to serve as a core mobility option across Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties.
