Get ready for takeoff, runners.

Most 5Ks promise some kind of scenic route. Well, this one gives you an actual runway.

Broward Children's Center has announced the return of its annual Miles for Smiles 5K on the Runway, and this year's event is taking off from a new location: Pompano Beach Airpark

The 23rd annual fundraiser lands on Saturday, Nov. 7, giving South Floridians a chance to run, walk or roll across an active airport runway while supporting medically fragile and developmentally disabled children and young adults throughout Broward County.

The family-friendly event welcomes everyone from competitive runners chasing a personal best to parents pushing strollers and community members showing support for a cause that has served Broward since 1971. Race-day festivities include children's activities, live entertainment, a DJ, raffles, photo opportunities and an awards ceremony following the race.

One of the most moving elements of the event happens on the course itself. Children receiving care through Broward Children's Center, including some who use electric wheelchairs, will participate with assistance from more than 40 volunteers from the International Institute for Health Care Professionals and Broward College's Associate of Science in Nursing program.

The timed and scored 5K begins at 9 a.m., with check-in opening at 8 a.m. Participants will receive a commemorative T-shirt and finisher medal, while awards will be presented to top overall finishers and age-group winners. Registration starts at $15 for students and $30 for general participants, with race-day registration priced at $40. Individuals and teams can also raise additional funds online ahead of the event.

Every dollar raised supports Broward Children's Center's medical, developmental, therapeutic and advocacy programs for children and families across South Florida.
