The horses may have the longer legs, but the corgis are coming for the track, y’all.
The Coastal Corgi Classic returns Saturday, October 10, at Gulfstream Park, 901 S. Federal Highway in Hallandale Beach. Per the official rules, registered corgis will race across roughly 40 yards of dirt in four qualifying heats. The top three finishers from each heat advance to a final, where one short-legged speedster will claim the championship trophy.
Think your corgi has a shot? Owners have until October 5 to submit Gulfstream Park’s entry form with a photo of their dog, proof of rabies vaccination and other required details. Entry is free, with one dog allowed per household. The field is capped at 48; if eligible entries exceed that number, racers will be chosen at random.
Bring a second adult if your pup makes the cut. One handler holds the corgi at the starting line while the other heads to the finish. Toys, treats and enthusiastic cheering are allowed; noisemakers and wagering are out. Dogs must be socialized and kept on leashes no longer than six feet when they’re off the course. Check-in also requires rabies records, a valid dog license and AKC papers.
Every entrant gets a commemorative swag bag, whether their corgi sprints to glory or stops to investigate the dirt. Browardist covered the inaugural race in March; now the loaf-shaped athletes get another go.
Gulfstream Park has not yet announced a race start time or spectator admission details – we promise there will be a follow-up story for that.
